Aug. 31—A fire destroyed a 30-foot pleasure craft, a dock and two personal watercraft Tuesday afternoon along the shore of the Songo River in Naples.

Naples Fire Chief Justin Cox said the fire, which was reported around 4:45 p.m., spread quickly from the boat to the dock and the personal watercraft. When firefighters arrived the boat was engulfed in flames.

The boat's owner, who escaped unharmed, told firefighters he was turning on the boat's bilge pump when it caught fire, Cox said. The cause remains under investigation.

Cox said the boat sank and about 60 gallons of fuel will have to be cleaned up. Naples' fire boat dragged booms over the spill and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was notified.

The Songo River flows into Sebago Lake. The boat's owner will be responsible for removing the sunken craft, Cox said. The incident took place in the vicinity of 370 State Park Road, near its intersection with Bear Claw Road.

It began as an attempted traffic stop and led onto a golf course, where befuddled players watched the episode unfold.

Caltrans in an update Thursday said the work may take months.

Why the boat left the channel remains the critical unanswered question in the investigation.

Ford Motor Co Chief Executive Jim Farley will go to Las Vegas next week to roll the dice on a strategy to convince dealers to cut as much as $2,000 from the cost of delivering an electric vehicle to a customer. Ford has told dealers that one key topic for the meetings will be a discussion of new agreements that would govern how dealers sell Ford's expanding lineup of electric vehicles. Farley told analysts in July that Ford needs to cut $2,000 a vehicle out of selling and distribution costs to be competitive with Tesla Inc and other electric vehicle startups that sell directly to consumers without franchised dealers.
