ORLAND PARK, IL — Orland Park residents may need to make additional preparations this season while officials flush fire hydrants throughout the village.

According to Illinois American Water, annual hydrant flushing will begin Thursday and continue throughout the summer. During these months, residents are asked to avoid running their faucets at certain times and clean their faucet filters in case additional debris or minerals slip through.

Hydrants are flushed periodically in order to evaluate the water pressure and quality at each pump. Experts told Patch the process of strongly dispelling water from each hydrant pushes out mineral deposits that may have accumulated along the inside walls of the water main.

"Everything we do centers around our customers and providing quality service at a good value," said Kevin Hillen, a senior manager for Illinois American Water, in a press release. "The annual maintenance program is a part of our commitment to delivering safe, reliable water service to homes and businesses, as well as fire hydrants."

During flushing, residents may see discoloration in their running water. If this does occur, officials advise running cold tap water until the water runs clear and then cleaning the faucet aerator.

Experts also advise avoiding doing laundry, dishes or showering during flushing as discolored water may cause stains.
