CASPER, Wyo. — A well pumphouse has been deemed a complete loss after becoming involved in fire Tuesday, but damage caused by the fire’s spread to a nearby residence is “minimal,” according to a release by the Natrona County Fire District.

The agency said that crews were dispatched around 3:11 p.m. Tuesday to a structure fire on Pedro Pass Road off West Highway 20-26. 

The reporting party stated there was a fire engulfing a well pump house and spreading to a nearby house. 

Firefighters arrived on scene from to find a working structure fire on the exterior of the residential and the pumphouse involved in fire, the release said.

After knocking down the well house fire and the fire on the exterior of the residence, crews made entry into the residence and were able to extinguish the fire there. Crews then conducted a primary search of the residence.

No occupants were found inside the home and the fire damage was “minimal” — contained to the living room and exterior of the house, the release said. The well house was a complete loss.

Crews then began overhaul operations to search for hidden fire.

The cause was determined by Mills Assistant Fire Chief Will Gay to be accidental: Embers from a torching operation to unfreeze pipes had ignited nearby combustible materials.

The agency reminded the public to be “extra vigilant” when using fire- or heat-related devices, and to check the surrounding area for hazards when operations have been completed.

The Bar Nunn and Mills fire departments, as well as the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office and Banner Medical Center, responded to the incident.
