JACKSON, MI – A Jackson County business that opened in 1922 is proud to still be serving the community 100 years later.

Keeping customers happy for 100 years: R.M. Brewer & Son celebrates milestone anniversary

Roy M. Brewer opened his business in 1922, and since then has helped thousands of residents with their water.

The well and pump service business in Parma is celebrating its 100th year of operation this year. And, while R.M. Brewer & Son Inc. has seen many changes through the years, it has stuck with its goal to always keep its customers happy with great service, co-owner Shaun Brewer said.

‘You hunted my grandson down.’ Jackson County pair gets 25 years for teen’s murder

An emotionally-charged morning in court Thursday ended with two Jackson County men being sentenced to at least 25 years in prison.

Anthony Jones III and Aivery Banks, both 19, are each set to spend 25 to 50 years in state prison on charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm, and first-degree murder and felony firearm, respectively. Both are convicted in the shooting death of 16-year-old Lataveon Cosey on Aug. 25, 2020.

Big Dog BBQ closed after fire sparks in kitchen

A Jackson-area BBQ joint is temporarily closed after a small fire broke out in the kitchen on Monday.

Fire crews were called at 1:59 p.m. Sept. 5, to Big Dog BBQ, 1200 W. Parnall Road in Blackman Township, according to the Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety.

Crews arrived to find the kitchen fire had been put out by a fire extinguisher, and the building suffered only minor damage, officials said.

‘Hard working, loyal’ Jackson man remembered during vigil at site of fatal shooting

Though he was the “baby” to his eight siblings, Markeithis Thomas-James “TJ” Smith will be remembered as a hard-working, generous and loyal man who did everything he could to help those around him.

“He was a great friend, a great brother, a great family man and a great father,” said Cartier Womack, a childhood friend of Smith. “Anything he could do for anybody, he’d help them.”

Womack joined dozens of other people at a vigil to honor Smith on the night of Sept. 3 in front of Greenwood Food & Beverage Party Store near downtown Jackson.

New credit union branch breaks ground in Jackson County

A new location of TRUE Community Credit Union is coming to northern Jackson County.

Construction on the new branch at 1309 W. Parnall Road broke ground on Sept. 1. The new stand-alone site will be 2,570 square feet and become the new home of the Country Market branch, officials said.

Upper Peninsula artist ready to help decorate Jackson at Bright Walls Festival

Growing up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Rhiannan Sibbald and her three younger sisters had to be creative when it came to entertaining themselves.

“We didn’t have internet until high school – and we were just forced to be imaginative,” said Sibbald, 26, who’s from Sault St. Marie.

Crafts, illustrating short stories and even a small fashion design phase in middle school really drove her creative brain, Sibbald said, and now this artist is ready to show her talents to Jackson at the Bright Walls Mural Festival.

Man killed in 2-vehicle crash after running stop sign in Jackson County

A man was killed in a crash Thursday evening when he ran a stop sign near Parma and collided with another vehicle.

Dhiraj Sharma, 44, of Otsego, was killed Sept. 1, in the crash at the intersection of Devereaux and Eaton Rapids roads in Parma Township west of Jackson, according to Michigan State Police.

The preliminary investigation indicated that at about 7:10 p.m., Sharma was going west on Devereaux Road when he failed to stop at the stop sign at Eaton Rapids Road and crashed into a vehicle traveling on Eaton Rapids Road, police said.

2022 Health Care Angels honored by Jackson Magazine

The 2022 Health Care Angel awards have been presented by Jackson Magazine.

The awards, which pay tribute to those who work in Jackson’s healthcare industry, were handed out during a Sept. 6 event at Jackson’s Ella Sharp Museum.

Award recipients are nominated by the community, patients and co-workers and reviewed by a panel of local healthcare experts. They represent the most dedicated members of the Jackson healthcare community, according to the magazine’s editors.
