Local Corvette owners, from left, Diana King, Walter Gerth, Fred Vogel and Jansen McDonald pose with their vehicles outside the Hayden Historical Museum’s Sinclair filling station. Hayden’s Auto Daze Gone By living history day will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 3.

Organizers have finalized plans for this year’s Hayden Daze Gone By living history day, which will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 3.

Using their 1947 Sinclair gas station as the centerpiece, Hayden Historical Museum officials would like to transform their property into a giant, one-day display of cars, trucks and motorcycles. There will be no entry fees, judging, prizes or awards. It will just be a fun day to give folks a chance to show off their vehicles.

The congregation of Hayden United Methodist Church will be serving an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast at the social hall from 7 to 10 a.m. Also, 7 a.m. is the registration time for the Luke Elsner Memorial 5K Walk/Run in the Hayden Elementary School parking lot. The walk/run begins at 8 a.m.

All of the museum buildings will open at 9 a.m. Along with the many artifacts and displays to help tell the history of Hayden and Spencer Township, there will be a special exhibition called “Map Quest.” Some of the old Spencer Township plat maps will be on display boards showing property ownership down through the years.

The Southern Indiana Model Railroad Association will have some of its model train sets on display in the museum’s meeting room. The old Sinclair gas station will be open, and visitors can find glass bottles of soda pop in the cooler, and old-fashioned snacks will be available in exchange for a donation. Sean Sullivan will be serving up freshly popped popcorn outside the station, and the Kovener’s Korner ice cream truck will be parked on the west side of the station.

The museum’s A Place Called Yesterday building is where visitors can hear Mike Waskom talk about and see him demonstrate what it was like to have home entertainment before electricity. When Waskom takes a break, John Ziegler will entertain the visitors by playing one of the antique pump organs.

There also is a display of an almost complete collection of Life magazines. Another museum building is the Sullivan Blacksmith Shop, where Bill Kendrick and some others will be conducting blacksmith demonstrations.

The pie baking contest will take place once again this year. Contestants can bring their fruit pies to the museum kitchen from 9 to 11 a.m., after which they will be judged on appearance and taste. Then the top three pies will be auctioned off by Tom Lawson on the pavilion stage at noon. The remaining pies will be sliced up and made available in the pavilion in exchange for a donation.

The Jennings County 4-H Fair queen, Brianna Caudill, and the members of her court, Ava Galliher, Graci Ross and Kamryn Marcum, will be on hand to assist with the pie auction.

Alan Brittingham and Patrick Sullivan will have their handmade guitars on display on the back stage of the pavilion. They are made from a variety of wood, including sycamore, Osage orange, purple heart, Indian rosewood, walnut and mahogany. Most have tops made of either Sitka spruce or Adirondack spruce. There also will be dulcimers, strum sticks (made with dulcimer scale) and cigar box guitars (also with dulcimer scale). All items are for sale.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 518 will be operating the pavilion concession stand serving food and other refreshments. Peyton and Haley Collett will be serving Big Red and root beer floats from the museum kitchen window beginning at noon. They plan to donate proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Spencer Township Volunteer Fire Department will be serving barbecue chicken dinners at the firehouse from noon until 7 p.m. Proceeds help the department with operational expenses.

Activities for the youngsters will include a Hot Wheels racetrack, and members of the Jennings County High School FFA chapter will be on hand to help conduct a pedal tractor course for the little ones. The Jennings County 4-H Junior Leaders will be running a dunk tank during the day. They invite you to stop by to see who might be sitting in the booth.

The FFA chapter also will be assisting with the parking lots, and volunteer drivers Roger Bowman, Perry Capes and Mark Biehle will be operating the shuttle service. The shuttle wagons travel from the museum to the blacksmith shop and firehouse and back to the museum.

Hayden’s version of Scoop the Loop will take place at 3 p.m. when the vehicles from the show will leave the museum grounds and take a parade lap around the town.
